RM Sotheby’s partnered with the Concours of Elegance Germany for a new Tegernsee auction at the end of July, which saw total sales of €15,921,925. One of the headline lots – a 1955 Porsche 550 Spyder – was withdrawn ahead of the auction, leaving the 2010 Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren Stirling Moss to take the top spot with a total of €3,436,250 including fees.
The Stirling Moss special edition SLR was a limited-run speedster, of which just 75 were sold in tribute to the driver’s astonishing 1955 Mille Miglia triumph. This example had covered just 45km from new, and like most was finished in the metallic Crystal Antimon Grey over a black and anthracite leather interior with complementing ‘Silver Arrow Leather 300 SL Red’ accents.
Taking up the second spot in the sales chart was a 1966 Ferrari 275 GTB/6C by Scaglietti painted in the correct combination of Amaranto with a beige leather interior. Restored by the Bacchelli & Villawas in 2004, certified by Ferrari Classiche in November 2005 (and re-inspected in May 2024)it sold for €2,536,250.
Something a little different, yet also playing to the strength of the German location was the sale of build slot number one of the upcoming HWA EVO for €1,310,000. This is in effect a Mercedes 190E restomod that pays homage to the legendary 2.5-16 Evo 2 Group A model, built by HWA – the engineering firm that was directly involved with the original DTM cars, among many others for Mercedes. Unlike the original, which featured a relatively modest naturally-aspirated four-cylinder, the new car will be powered by a twin-turbo V6 engine, combined with a six-speed manual.
A particular rarity was the 1965 Aston Martin DB Short-Chassis Volante. One of just 37 built, this car was delivered to the USA when new and had been changed from Goodwood Green to red and converted from automatic to manual before it was re-exported to Germany in the 1990s. It sold for €815,000.
In-line with other recent European auctions, many of the results came in just below their low estimates with quite a few just falling short of their reserves – notably the 2010 Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport ‘Soleil de Nuit’ and Le Mans-competing 1934 Aston Martin Ulster, which is offered post-sale for €1,050,000.
